This is an article I composed about the art and science of amateur critique and criticism for writers and writers' groups. Scribophile.com is a great site for new (or veteran) writers to get constructive feedback for their work and to hone their own criticism skills. Unlike many other online writers' groups, the community is serious, respectful, and genuinely helpful. Highly recommended. QueryShark is hard-nosed and brilliant. Read, cringe, and learn. |
TVTropes is as addictive as it is fascinating. If you've ever bought into the delusion that your writing must be completely original, this website will fix that misconception for your right quick.
On Becoming a Novelist, by John Gardner, is an important book if you want to improve your fiction. Despite a slightly-distracting overabundance of the pronoun "he," this may be the most formative thing I've read about the art of writing. It's brief, readable, practical, and comprehensive. On Writing, by Stephen King, is another book that should be in your library if you want to write well. Something of an autobiography penned by one of our most successful living authors, On Writing is snappy, humorous, downright entertaining, and more than a little instructive for anyone looking to write and read better |
